Adsorption by waste materials - An effective method for removal of pollutants from wastewater

Sunil Jayant Kulkarni

Abstract

Various pollutants in wastewater with high organic and metal content poses a major problem in the field of wastewater treatment. Removal of pollutants by adsorption is very effective and economical method. Low cost materials can be used for adsorption preparation. These include adsorbents prepared from saw dust, bagasse pith, rice husk ash, activated coconut shell powder controlled burnt wood charcoal, fly ash, peat, wood, jute fibers. It is envisaged to develop more and more cost effective techniques for preparation and regeneration of the adsorbents, which will make it more economical. Thus, “use of waste for treating the waste”, is the need of the society. The disposal problem of the adsorbent may lead us to new research, i.e. potential use of the used adsorbent as a fuel especially in case the adsorbent is organic pollutant. Keywords: organic matter, heavy metals, cost, treatment, removal, pollutants.
