Review on recent trends in dye sensitized solar cells using natural extracts

Gengan Saravanan, T. R. Heera

Abstract

This review summarizes the recent trends in the progress of dye sensitized solar cells. Here we offer insights on the current developments in solar cells using natural extracts from various plants. Dye sensitized solar cells have attracted immense attention among researchers as a cheap and environmentally benign technology for harvesting solar energy. Researchers have investigated dye extracts from various plants using their fruits, flowers, seeds, barks, etc as sensitizers. Currently, dye sensitized solar cells employing natural dyes have achieved only 2% efficiency. Development of highly efficient dye sensitized solar cell by suitably altering the various components and increasing the stability of the dyes will pave the way to employing natural extracts in solar cells.
