Colorimetric detection of biologically important anion based on ICT Between Donor–Acceptor (D–A): Experimental and DFT studies

Abstract


A novel three organic colorimetric receptor B have been designed and synthesized by a simple condensation reaction. Receptor B showed remarkable color change from pale yellow to blue upon addition of basic fluoride and acetate ion in DMSO. Receptor B displayed high selectivity for sodium salts of fluoride and acetate in aqueous medium due to the presence of nitro moiety in the backbone of the receptor which increases the acidity of anion binding site, thereby facilitates the intramolecular charge transition (ICT) between the electron rich –OH proton and the electron deficient nitro group through push-pull nature. Importantly, receptor B detect sodium fluoride in an aqueous medium even at 0.245 ppm, which is much lower than WHO permissible level (below 1ppm). The anion sensing properties of the receptors via ICT mechanism were monitored by the UV-visible titration, 1HNMR titration, DFT studies.
