Abstract

In this work, binodal curves and tie-line liquid-liquid equilibria experimental data were obtained for the ternary systems water + acetic acid + ethyl acetate, water + acetic acid + methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) and water + acetic acid + mixed solvent (ethyl acetate + MIBK) at 293.15 K and atmospheric pressure by cloud-point titration method. Binodal curves, tie-line data, distribution coefficient and separation factor data were determined for these systems. Three Correlation models, namely Hand, Othmer and Ishida correlations, were used to test the quality and reliability of experimental tie-line data, which fit the data very well, producing high values of correlation coefficient (R2) nearly equal to unity. From the analysis of the area under the binodal curves, distribution coefficient and selectivity values, it has been concluded that all these solvents are suitable separating agents for acetic acid from its dilute aqueous solution, and ethyl acetate gives a better extraction result than MIBK and their combination. As the result of experimental data, the hierarchy of selecting the order of the solvent based on a two-phase region (binodal curve), distribution coefficient and selectivity is given as ethyl acetate > mixed (EA + MIBK) > MIBK. Furthermore, it is observed that ethyl acetate has high dissolving power for acetic acid compared to other solvents. Hence, it will be required in fewer amounts than all other solvents for extracting the same amount of acetic acid
