Extraction and Purification of Kaempferol from leaves of Azadirichta indica

Surya prakash D V

Abstract

Azadirachta indica, commonly known as neem, It contains phytochemical compounds like phenolic compounds, flavonoids (Quercetin and kaempferol), tannins, gallic acid, nimbosterol, catechin, nimbine, etc. It shows many pharmacological activities like anti-oxidant, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory activities etc. For the extraction of kaempferol from neem leaves, the optimum results were observed for the effects of different solvents, different solvent percentages, particle size, pH and extraction time for the extraction of  kaempferol were methanol, 80%, 125 microns, 7.0 and 24hr respectively. The highest kaempferol concentration for optimized conditions was 5.8µg/ml. In the Soxhlet extraction process, the extraction of kaempferol  concentration was 8.8µg/ml obtained from leaves of neem at 9hr. This extract was drawn in to the Column chromatography and its concentration was increased to 12.0µg/ml.
