Extraction and Purification of Tannins from leaves of Azadirichta indica

Surya prakash D V

Abstract

Azadirachta indica is a medicinal plant and commonly known as neem species. It contains phytochemical compounds like phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tannins, gallic acid, nimbosterol, catechin, nimbine, etc. It shows many pharmacological activities like anti-oxidant, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory activities etc. The present studies on optimization of physico-chemical parameters like effects of different solvents, different solvent percentages, particle size, pH and extraction time for the extraction of  tannins was studied. For the extraction of tannins, the optimum results were observed for the effects of different solvents, different solvent percentages, particle size, pH and extraction time for the extraction of  tannins were ethanol, 60%, 125 microns, 6.0 and 24hr respectively. The highest tannins concentration for optimized conditions was 26.0µg/ml. In the steam distillation process, the extraction of tannins concentration was 37.0µg/ml obtained from leaves of neem at 4hr. This extract was drawn in to the Column chromatography and its concentration was increased to 42.0µg/ml.
