Modeling the Diffusion Characteristics of Sawdust in Crude Oil Medium

Chukwuemeke. P Ukpaka, P. N Ikenyiri

Abstract

Over the years, oil spill pollution has become an important issue of concern due to its serious environmental impact; Therefore natural organic sorbent such as Abura sawdust was used for oil spill cleanup due to its availability, eco-friendliness and low cost, and was selected as the preferred sorbent and the effects of sorbent contact time and its particle size on oil adsorption capacity were evaluated for the systems of dry and crude oil layer on water. In this study, the rate of diffusion of sawdust in a crude oil medium in adsorption process was developed mathematically which was simulated using a MATLAB program with a Matlab Version of R 2015 and the obtained results show a decrease in concentration as distance (depth) increases across the packed column. The results obtained was validated and compared with experimental results obtained from experiment This study is useful because it can be applied in predicting and monitoring the rate of Bio-adsorption using this material as an absorbent for effective remediation of contaminated soil environment.
