EFFECT OF ALGAE & COAGULANTS ON PHARMACUTICAL EFFLUENT CHARACTERSTICS

Ajay Singh, Shristi Bisht

Abstract

Pharmaceutical industry effluents may contain many elements including calcium, magnesium, silica, chromium nickel, iron, cobalt, zinc etc. These heavy metals which are produced by the industrial waste are a big threat for the environment. They can also harm the ecosystem. In this study biochemical treatment of algae and coagulants was given to pharmaceutical industry effluent and reduction in polluting parameters was determined. It was observed that in the presence of Algae, lime and alum, all the heavy metals and toxic compounds from effluent were reduced by about 70 to 80%.BOD, COD, TSS and other polluting parameters were also reduced by 75 to 85%. Key Word- Effluent, Algae, Coagulants, polluting parameters, biochemical treatment
