Abstract

This paper presents the design and energy analysis of styrene production process. Process flow diagram is designed using Aspen HYSYS. Styrene product obtained is of purity 73% and further purity is recommended. Pinch analysis is applied to the process plant by using Aspen Energy Analyzer, as a part of that in the first step all the stream data is extracted, in the second step heat exchanger networks (HEN) is developed for the base case design and in the third step retrofit is done for the base case design. Retrofit is applied here to find an alternative energy-efficient HEN which minimizes the operating costs. In retrofit analysis five new heat exchangers are added to the base case HEN which reduced the operating cost with the payback period of less than one year. Keywords: Aspen HYSYS, pinch analysis, heat exchanger networks (HEN), Aspen energy analyzer, retrofit analysis
