EFFECTS OF THE LABORATORY ASSISTED LECTURE METHODS ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF GRADE 8 STUDENTS IN CHEMISTRY SUBJECT IN FINOTE SELAM WOREDA, AMHARA REGION

Tadele Ageru Alemu

Abstract

In Science education, laboratories are considerably important because they provide the opportunity for students to perform various hands-on activities. The aim of this study was to examine the comparative effects of the laboratory assisted and lecture methods on primary school students’ achievements in chemistry subject. With this aim, four research questions and four hypotheses guided the study. Sixty six (66) students (12 male and 11 female in the experimental group and 22 male and 21 female in control group) from two randomly selected primary schools were involved in the study. The study was used an experimental research design. Two different instruments pre-test and post-test were used to collect the data in the present study. While the pre-test consisting of 10 multiple choice and 8 short answer items were applied to determine students’ preconceptions about the topic under the investigation in first week before the treatment .Similarly the post-test with 10 multiple choice and short answer items were implemented to their new levels of understanding after the treatment. The experimental group was taught with a teaching method based on laboratory assisted while the control group was taught by the traditional approach. The collected data were analyzed by using the independent samples t test at a significant level of 0.05.Results obtained revealed that students perform better in chemistry when taught using the laboratory assisted method as compared to the lecture method. The male and female are better in academic achievement when taught taught using laboratory assisted method than when lecture method was used. The laboratory assisted method shows equality in the performance of male and female. Hence the adoption of laboratory assisted methods in the teaching and learning of science in general and chemistry in particular is hereby recommended.
