Air Pollution in India: Trend and Magnitude

Abstract


Pollution is a serious problem across the world. Pollution is the contamination of the Earth’s environment with substances that interferes with human life in terms of health and natural functioning of the ecosystem. Of all types of pollution, air pollution is a serious health problem in urban cities. It is one of the most aggravating factors responsible for respiratory ailments and cardiovascular diseases. Several diseases such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are commonly occurring diseases because of air pollution. Among the world’s top 20 most polluted cities, 13 have been reported from India. The worst being Delhi, the densely populated capital territory of India [1].
