Remediation and Management of Industrial Waste Water and Polluted Soil

Ram Kishore Asthana

Abstract

Environmental contamination is a serious problem prevailing worldwide. Inadequate disposal of wastes from industrial, agricultural, mining and municipal sectors is the prime cause of environmental degradation and increasing ecological imbalance. The flora and fauna are disturbed because of accumulation of untreated waste materials. Remediation methods that were developed earlier are highly costly and not quite effective in treating the wastes and toxic substances such as heavy metals, and organic compounds generated from industries and agricultural growth. Bioremediation is a novel and biological method that has been developed for treating waste materials in an environment-friendly manner. This method is less expensive than the primitive methods and has high efficiency output. The strategy behind these methods, its implications, recent research outcomes, advantages and disadvantages are being discussed here. Bioremediation is a unique, eco-friendly and effective method for removal of contaminants/pollutants from soil and/or water. This technology makes use of microorganisms and biological processes to remove or detoxify the pollutants. The purpose of bioremediation is to make environment free from pollution with help of environmental friendly microbes. This review highlights the salient features of bioremediation process, different strategies, its benefits and limitations, and recent developments in bioremediation management.
