Abstract

In the production of ethanol by fermentation, there is discharge of large quantities of high strength liquid waste. Distillery waste water is known as one of the most polluted waste water to dispose due to its dark brown colour, high temperature, highly acidic nature and high percent of dissolved organic and inorganic matter. It has very high values of Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) depending on feed stock and various aspect of ethanol production process. In every industry waste water is treated by various methods that use electricity. Nowadays one of the most serious problems is energy crisis and water population all over the world. We need to identify new technologies which are energy efficient. Microbial fuel cell is a technology which helps to treat waste water as well as generates electricity. In a Sugar industry after molasses fermentation and alcohol distillation, the spent wash of distillation contains many organic matter which can be use to generate electricity. This analysis explores the application of double chamber MFC in generating electricity using distillery wastewater. The maximum voltage, BOD, COD, pH, TDS and Hardness obtained with relevance time. MFC of distillery sewer water showed removal efficiency 84.54% COD, 69.44% BOD. The voltage generation within the reactor is 0.94 Volt
