Production and Characterization of Biomass Briquette from Sawdust and Cow Dung Admixture for Domestic Cooking Applications in Northern Ethiopia

Gebreyohannes Gebrehiwot Tesfay

Abstract

This study explored the possibility of producing and characterize biomass briquettes from sawdust and caw dung admixture that could be used as a sustainable fuel sources of energy supply for domestic cooking applications. In this study, Potato starch used as a binder. The physical and composition properties of the sawdust and cow dung as well as the developed biomass Briquettes were determined using Thermogravimetric analysis. A portion of sawdust and cow dung was treated and the sawdust was grind and screened into a constant particle size (2mm) using the standard sieve mesh size. Biomass Briquettes were produced by mixing sawdust and cow dung in with the percentage ratios of 25:75, 50:50, 60:40, 70:30 and 80:20 respectively from a total weight (300 gm) with a constant amount of Potato starch (30%). The product was characterized through density, porosity index, shatter resistance, volatile matter, ash content, fixed carbon and calorific value. In addition, the effect of the mixing ratio of the sawdust with the cow dung on the quality of the briquette was investigated. The results revealed that the weight composition of 60:40 has overall best characteristics from the other mixing ratios. The obtained results for this Briquette was 0.474g/cm3 density, 40.51% porosity index, 98.7% shatter resistance, 23.68% volatile matter, 4.58% ash content, 71.74% fixed carbon and 4024.73 kcal/kg calorific value.
