Rapid screening of autonomous electrical power systems using techno-commercial criteria for deep decarbonization in remote areas

Rupsha Bhattacharyya

Abstract

Techno-commercial analysis of various carbon free electrical energy supply scenarios for remote areas such as islands is absolutely imperative in formulating policies for deep decarbonization and greening of these regions. Options include replacing the current practice of using diesel generators by autonomous power systems based on renewable energy and battery based electricity storage, renewably derived electricity and hydrogen energy storage or use of small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs), provided there are no technological, geographical, geological, environmental or economic constraints at a location under consideration. This work analyses several such scenarios and determines the levelised cost of electricity supply for 6 scenarios when a constant electrical power output is required throughput the year, using the Andaman and Nicobar island region of southern India as a case study. The most promising scenario is identified and parametric sensitivity analysis is also performed to determine factors with the maximum influence on the electrify price in such scenarios.
