EFFECT OF GLUCOSE ON PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF SOME SURFACTANT SOLUTIONS

Tadele Ageru Alemu

Abstract

Physico-chemical and thermodynamic studies of some aqueous surfactant solutions were carried out by employing conductance and dye solubilization (UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy) techniques. From the above measurements, critical micelle concentration (CMC) and thermodynamic properties of micellization (ΔGomic , ΔHomic and ΔSomic) have been obtained for an anionic [Sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS)],a cationic [hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, (HTAB)] and non ionic (Tween-20) surfactant solutions. Effect of mixing cosolute on CMC and thermodynamics properties of micellization of surfactant systems at 298, 308, and 318K has been investigated. The addition of cosolute (glucose) caused a decrease in CMC of studied surfactant solutions where as the thermodynamics analysis shows that although the micellization was less favorable in mixed solvent compared to pure water, the process is spontaneous and exothermic. Key Words: conductance, glucose, dye solubilization, micellization, physico-chemical proper
