Impact of Agriculture Production on Climate: Contributor and Victim

Amit Ray, Archana Rai, S. Ravichandran

Abstract

The agriculture production is one of the major contributors in emission of Greenhouse gases (GHGs) emission, soil degradation, biodiversity losses and pollution and hence both contributor and victim to climate change. According to IPCC, Agriculture sector accounts to around 24 percent of total GHGs emission. The Impact on climate largely depends on the agricultural practices of scale of these farming/agricultural practices of farmers. As per consensus of IPCC, its already notable that since 1950s that climate has changed significantly, and believed that in other half of the century, (based on future GHGs emission) there will be 0.4-2.6 C rise in Global mean surface air temperature.Agriculture is very sensitive to the climate, which means, change in climate would result in stress for plants, livestock and fishes making them prone to many diseases, ability to reproduce or change the lifecycle of many species which could disturb the ecosystem. This review paper reports the impact of agriculture due to climate changes.
