Seaweeds nanoparticles for wastewater treatment

Prashant Agarwal, Ritika Gupta

Abstract

Wastewater comprises of organic, biological and inorganic pollutants. By 2020, the world’s population is expected to reach 7.9 billion further, leading to severe water scarcity. Water purification by nanotechnology can be a possible approach as it can eliminate contaminants and help in the recycling process of nanoparticles to control the economy of water treatment technology. Nanotechnology is one of the major fields of modern research which has escalated over the past few decades. Currently, this field is being applied in the production of modified nanostructures, nanocomposites and water purification membranes. Seaweeds have become significant organisms for biological purification of wastewater due to their capability of accumulating highly toxic substances, heavy metals and radioactive matters thus making them the superior contender for the biosynthesis of nanoparticles. This paper aimed to give an overall review of seaweeds in the wastewater treatment industry and possibility of metal nanoparticle synthesis using them. Utilization of biological systems for wastewater treatment can proved to be energy-efficient, ecofriendly, high-yielding and economical method. This review mainly focusses on recent progress on the utilization of seaweeds or macroalgae for the synthesis of various nanoparticles, their characterization and possible mechanisms. Keywords: nanotechnology, seaweed, nanoparticle, wastewater, organic pollutant
