Photochemical Reactions: A Greener Approach and its Importance and Applications

Geeta Verma

Abstract

Photochemical reactions are the foundation of many such processes which are center of maintaining life on earth. Photochemical reactions play a significant role in the environment including a considerable range of reactions in the atmosphere, natural waters, soil and living things. Most common and well-known example of a photochemical reactions are photosynthesis basis of vision and synthesis of Vitamin D. Photochemical reactions are used in the synthesis of both organic and inorganic compounds. Photochemical reactions can often work as excellent choice for green synthesis an example of this is synthesis of Benzo pinacol using greener solvent alcohol instead of isopropanol following atom economy principle of green chemistry. The photochemical process shows ideal atom economy, as the transformation is initiated by a photon, rather than an extra reagent. The prerequisite for photochemical reactions is the absorption of UV and visible radiations. This present
review is an attempt to throw a light on importance and applications of various photochemical reactions as part of green chemistry.
