Determination of Metallic Content Level in Crops Planted Proximity to Vehicle Traffic Road Using X-ray Diffraction and Fluorescence Spectroscopy

Joseph A. Owolabi, Ibrahim Rabiu

Abstract

This work shows practical method to determine the metallic content level in the farm crops planted located in area proximity to vehicle traffic road of high flow. A suite of advanced analytical laboratory technique, x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy disperse x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRFS) were used in this work to quantify the metalliccontent level. The analysis of the crops planted by the farmer showed high content of elements such asMn, Sn, Cu and Fe. Results showed that heavy metal content concentration was highest in the area that is very close of shortest distance of few centimeters to vehicle road of high flow. Element Fe and Sn had highest concentration while element Mn and Cd had the lowest concentration. At very far distances to the traffic road, the concentration of metallic content level was very minimal. The result of this study shows both the positive and negative implications to human health.
