Studies on non-destructive inspection of steel wire ropes

Bangshidhar Goswami

Abstract

Non-destructive tests (NDT) of steel wire ropes under services are experienced to estimate remnant life with reference to new and similar components tested under similar conditions. Inspection by magnetic defect-stray fields’ to gamma radiography for imaging defects in addition, for suspended bridges have been methods of tests to configure defect morphologies in wires. This is beyond standard periodic inspections accounted from constrains of pre broken wires, multi-axial deformation, frictional wear, vibration, velocity, corrosion and absence of coating/lubrications.
