Treatment of Petroleum Hydrocarbon: The Concept of Dissolved Oxygen and Iron Characteristics using Adsorbent and Temperature Effect

Ukpaka Chukwuemeka Peter, Achadu M. Abah M. Abah

Abstract

The treatment of petroleum hydrocarbon was monitored by considering the characteristics of dissolved oxygen and iron concentration on the impact of temperature variation on the performance of the adsorbent used. The research revealed that increase in the potential performance of the adsorbent in petroleum hydrocarbon removal enhanced variation in the characteristics of the dissolved oxygen and iron content in the packed bed unit for the treatment of water medium contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbon. The research demonstrates the effect of temperature on the concentration of dissolved oxygen and iron content in stage of the treatment process. The effective temperature for high performance of the adsorbent is within the range of 30oC to 60oC but the best operating temperature is 45oC as revealed in this research work. At this temperature of 45oC there is high contact between the contaminants and the adsorbent, which enhanced contaminants removal as well as enhance water quality before discharge into the environment. According to the research, variations in the dissolved oxygen and iron content characteristics in the packed bed unit for the treatment of petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated water medium were exacerbated by an increase in the adsorbent's potential performance in petroleum hydrocarbon removal.
