Study of Solid Waste Management in Shrirampur, Pusad—Case Study

Abstract


Solid waste management (SWM) is one of the most essential services for maintaining the quality of life of the people and for ensuring better standard of health, sanitation and the environment. Total quantity of municipal solid waste (MSW) generated everyday has increased with increased population. Management of MSW has emerged as a problem which concern about environment. The present study was undertaken to study the existing system of collection, storage, transportation and disposal of MSW in Shrirampur, which is rapidly growing village on the outskirts of Pusad. Study was carried out to assess the quantity and quality of MSW. Study indicates that that the existing system of SWM is not proper and house to house and segregate collection of solid waste is needed to be planned and implemented. Composting facility for preparation of compost from biodegradable and material recovery facility for sorting of recyclables can be provided. Inert material can be used as a landfilling material.
