Biodegradation of Plastic using Micro-organisms

Devendra Pratap Singh

Abstract

Plastics have become an important of modern life and are used in different sectors of application. In a year about 260 million tons of plastics are produced worldwide. Demand for plastics in India reached about 9.99 million tons in year 2014-2015. Plastics are high molecular weight organic source materials. In the present in view of the increasing use of plastics and its harmful effects, it has become necessary to prepare the substitute of polymer or prepare it in such a way that it can be easily
decomposed and transformed into other products. In the sense of conversion of Plastics into its monomers Biotic and biotic strategies are needs to be approved in the system. Using Biotic and biotic strategies it is easier to convert polymers in to monomers. In this content microbe are helpful to react on monomers in the degradation process by releasing enzymes. The optimum conditions of environment and polymer characteristic affected the rate of degradation by microbial action. There are different methods involved in microbial action which is changed by the need of the time to generate bio based plastics which can be degraded easily as biodegradable polymers. Degradation is defined as the reductions in the molecular weight of polymer, plastics waste accumulating in the environment are posing an ever increasing ecological threat. Here we aim to isolate and identify microorganism associated with plastics. Bacteria were isolated used NA medium and TSA medium were incubated for
five days. Isolated were results towards analyzed 1 month of incubation in liquid culture method at 370Cwith agitation 130 ppm. The biodegradation of polymer of plastics was resulted by isolate of 22 TSB (used medium Triptych soy broth) were 17% in 1 month, microbial count in the degrading material were recorded up to 3.08x10^6. The microbial species found associated with the degrading material were identified as gram positive (shape rod, have no spore).
