Effect of Temperature on Fungi Concentration in Crude Oil Remediation in an Aerated Bioreactor

Chukwuemeke. P Ukpaka, Okirie Faith Uchendu

Abstract

This research work was conducted to demonstrate the significance of temperature on the characteristics of fungi growth of crude oil degradation in fresh and salt water media. Comparison of fresh and salt contaminated water media was examined, the effect of temperature on crude oil degradation and the characteristics of total heterotrophic bacteria and fungi action. For Total Heterotrophic Fungi (THF) were Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, mucor sp, penicillium sp, Aspergillus sp, lomentospora sp, Fusarium sp, collecttrichum sp, cladosporium sp, Trichoderma sp and Rhizopus sp for both fresh water and salt water media. The growth rate of the THF in the bioreactor was catalyzed by the action of temperature, which influenced the crude oil degradation. The crude oil (substrate) degradation was monitored with respect to variation in temperature over time as well as the growth rate of the THF. The research work reveals that increase in temperature influenced the THF growth rate characteristics of some of the microorganisms from 2xx102 cfug-1 to 102 cfug-1 for fresh water and 17xx102 for salt water medium. The results obtained also revealed the organisms that are effective to remediation or degradation of the crude oil on the effect of temperature and oxygen introduced into the system. This investigation demonstrates the effect of temperature on crude oil degradation, remediation and treatment to achieve good effectiveness of microbes in enhancing restoration of contaminated water medium.
