Studies on the degradation of jute blended cotton fabric in soil, water and ambient atmosphere

Md. Sahadat Hossain

Abstract

Although, we are more concern about the environment pollution, we cannot reduce the use of pollutant in a significant limit. The use of bio-degradable materials is one of the best methods to reduce environmental pollution. In our present research we tried to find biodegradable materials, jute and cotton, to keep our environment pollution free. We also showed the effect of environment on the degradation properties of the mentioned materials. The prepared jute-cotton (JC) blended fabrics were kept under six inch soil, in an open environment/air and in water. The samples which were kept under the soil (containing at least 25% water) completely degraded after 30 days. The sample in an open environment and water took 12 months and 180 days respectively for complete degradation. The degradation properties were also significantly varied according to the seasons (rainy and winter season). The variations on the tensile properties and images carried good evidence of the degradation properties.
