Removal of Phenol from Waste Water by Adsorption on Powdered Activated Carbon

V. Venkata Basava Rao, Nupur Gangal

Abstract

The phenol removal from aqueous solution using the commercial powder activated carbon (PAC) was carried out. A variety of temperature, starting concentration, adsorbent dosage, and contact duration conditions were tested during batch kinetics and isotherm experiments. The equilibrium data in aqueous solution was represented and fit by Langmuir, Freundlich Adsorption Isotherms. The data fit the pseudo-second order model satisfactorily, according to kinetic studies. Effect of the temperature
(thermodynamics) showed that with increase of temperature decrease of adsorption takes place i.e. process is exothermic. Thus we concluded that Activated Carbon was a suitable adsorbent for the phenol removal from water. This study investigated the adsorption capacity of activated carbon
powder (PAC) on phenol in aqueous solutions. To determine the results of various experimental parameters, including PAC type, PAC dose, initial solution pH, temperature, and pre-oxidation upon this adsorption of phenol by PAC as well as to set up the adsorption kinetics, thermo-dynamics, and
isothermal models, batch adsorption studies were conducted. The outcomes showed that PAC adsorbed is a useful technique for removing phenol from water, and all five of the parameters had a significant impact on phenol adsorption.
