Biogas generation by co-digestion of sewage sludge with Crude Glycerol

Susarla Venkata Ananta Rama Sastry, B. Sarva Rao

Abstract

Most of the sludge originating from commercial or industrial establishments is contaminated with toxic materials that are released into the sewers. The growing population and industrial expansion have both led to increase in volume of wastewater discharge and thus demand for a sustainable method for the treatment and disposal of this wastewater has also been amplified. Researchers have been working on various methods, such as Aerobic ponds, Activated sludge process, Tricking bed filters, etc. for treatment of wastewater in sustainable manner. Anaerobic digestion is also referred to as bio-methanization, is a natural process that takes place in absence of air (oxygen). It involves biochemical decomposition of complex organic material by various biochemical processes with release of energy rich biogas and production of nutritious effluents.
