Hansa Jeswani, Gaurav Patil

Abstract

Air pollution is a problem which has been consistently growing all around the world. Mumbai city has witnessed increase in air pollution through several decades. COVID-19 has been a ray of hope where the pollution levels have been reported lower than usual in several cities in India owing to the curbs which have been extended since march 2019 in India and in several other countries A short term reduction in air pollution has been witnessed in Mumbai too. This study examines the impact of imposing a 21-day lockdown on air pollution in Mumbai by comparing pollutant concentration data from 7 Air Quality Index stations in Mumbai. Over Pre Lockdown, during lockdown & post lockdown period. The study indicates that there was substantial variation in pollutant concentration, PM10 [Min (-17.17%)-Max-49.44%], PM2.5 [Min (-307.8%)-Max-(43.76)%], NOx [Min (-93.37)%-Max-(83.63)%] and CO [Min(-4.76%)-Max-100%]. This study provides a knowhow of how the pollution can be abated by resorting to measures like lockdown in case of worse case scenario.
