Abstract

This work was majorly focused on the production of biogas anaerobically through the co-digestion of cow-dungs and tannery waste and also to reduce the concentration of sulphide by direct inclusion of facultative lagoon sediment with sodium and calcium alginate. Various tannery fleshing to cow-dung ratio of 1:0, 1:0.5, 1:1 and 1:2 were investigated. The optimum was established to be ratio 1:2 is designated as a top methane concentration up to 45.5% (v/v) against 1.9%, 4.1% by volume, 7.3% by volume, for 1:0, 1:0.5 and 1:1 respectively. The research shows that each minutes of sodium and calcium alginates (0.01% wt/v) concentration was introduced in the beginning of the anaerobic digestion cycle and show the tendency to rise methane concentration and shrink hydrogen sulphide concentration of the system. This research also recommend the soaking of liquor as diluents in the anaerobic digestion of tannery fleshing, cow dung and tannery waste utilization up to the ratio 2:1 for anaerobic co-digestion respectively, the use of facultative lagoon sediments as basic inoculant and the use of sodium and calcium alginates (0.01% wt/v) behaving as a chelating ligands in order to remove hydrogen sulphide sulphide and also boost dry methane product up to 20% and above with very good combustion characteristics.
