A Generic Assessment of Commercial Battery based Energy Storage Projects Round the World

Abstract


The importance of battery based electrical energy storage projects is on the rise globally, especially in conjunction with the boom in renewable energy technology deployment all over the world. A number of large scale battery energy storage projects have already been deployed and several more are in the pipeline. Along with it, research and development activities on novel battery chemistries are being actively pursued. This work aims to present major details of commercially deployed large scale battery storage projects in various countries and discusses the challenges still remaining and the possible future course of action in this field. Thus it focuses exclusively on techno-commercially mature technologies and is expected to be a brief review of all the major prospects and problems of grid scale battery electricity storage as it exists today. The link between batteries and smart grid technology has also been brought out in this work.
