Cassia Fistula Leaf and Flower Extract and their Antibacterial Activity: A Comparative Study

Abstract

Overwhelming side effects of synthetic drugs has attracted researchers for the search and use of herbal drugs. Neem and Curcumin are very widely studied and research is still going on these species. However, Cassia Fistula, is one such plant which has various medicinal values and is less studied. Thus, the present investigation studies the extraction of leaf and flower constituents and the extract has been characterized by FTIR and NMR spectroscopy. Further, in-vitro antibacterial activities of the ethanolic extract of Cassia Fistula leaf and flower extract have also been studied. The pure Cassia Fistula leaf extract shows a zone of inhibition of 19, 37, and 35 mm against Escherichia Coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis, respectively. However, Cassia Fistula flower extract has shown inhibition zone of 20, 27 and 26 mm respectively, against Escherichia Coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis, respectively. Thus, Cassia Fistula leaf extract has more antibacterial activity than its flower extract
